Christmas is always a good excuse to open some dessert wine and maybe some port – two styles of wines that we probably don't open every week.
Christmas pudding is not an easy dish to match wine with because of its richness, but Campbells Rutherglen Muscat (half bottle – Waitrose 9.99, Oddbins 11.99) from Australia is ideal. It's made from muscat grapes, fortified and then matured in old oak barrels.
This wine is wonderfully luscious, with raisins, toffee apples, spices and an intensely sweet finish.
As for port, you don't need to push the boat out. A decent LBV will be fine and this year my favourite is Taylors LBV.
Taylors LBV 2004
A great port to have with Stilton, with lovely black fruits and spices and a rich intense, powerful finish.
On offer at Tesco, Waitrose, Majestic from 9.99
