I’m not entirely sure if there are any hard and fast rules for selecting wines for Mother’s Day, but my guess is that the aim of the day is to spoil mum. So here are a few suggestions for her day.
Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut NV (Ocado on offer £23.49) is one of two Champagnes this week, and this of course has the perfect name! It is quite a full-bodied style of Champagne with toasty notes and some richness and it works well with food, so if you are serving smoked salmon this would do nicely. Waitrose Sancerre La Franchotte 2012 (Waitrose £11.49, on offer from £14.49) is made for Waitrose by Joseph Mellot, one of the most respected producers in the region. This is food-friendly Sauvignon Blanc with fresh green herbs, citrus and some gooseberry notes, elegant and well-balanced.
Champagne Jacquart Brut Mosaïque
This is really good value Champagne; a blend of predominately Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which has been aged for at least three years. It has real depth of flavour with apple and pear fruit as well as some brioche on the nose and the palate shows a lovely creaminess and good length.Perfect Sunday brunch Champagne.
