So December is here and it’s time to think about those all-important Christmas wines.
Spain has been high on my list of reds this year, so let’s start in Rioja.
If you want to treat yourself then Vina Ardanza Reserva 2004, Rioja (Majestic £23.50 or buy two for £18.50) is the real deal. It’s a classic Rioja with red fruits, spices, leather and tobacco.
It has great depth and complexity, and would certainly work wonderfully with turkey.
If you fancy bringing a little Australian sunshine to your table then Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Shiraz (Tesco & Ocado £10.99) has always been a Christmas tradition in our house.
This sparkling red even smells like Christmas, with red berry fruits and spices. It will certainly grab everyone’s attention if nothing else.
TOP TIPPLE: Escarpment ‘The Edge’ Pinot Noir 2012
New Zealand Pinot Noir is a great match with turkey and this gorgeous wine is going to work perfectly with all those flavours on the Christmas plate. There are cherries, plums and spices, with just a little savouriness. It is medium-bodied but very supple with a long, flavoursome finish.
Waitrose, £11.24, on offer from £14.99 until January 2.
