It's a real supermarket sweep at The Co-operative

It now accounts for almost 90 per cent of all the wine bought in the UK, much of it, it has to be said, is bought on discount.

However, the last few years have seen a review by some of the major supermarkets.

Many are reducing their range in an effort to simplify their offering as well as recognising the threat of the rise of retailers such as Lidl and Aldi with their low-cost, low-choice range.

More isn’t always better, and one of the best supermarket ranges right now can be found at The Co-operative, which manages to have some interesting and really well chosen wines in its relatively compact range.

Leading with its Truly Irresistible wines, which, despite the somewhat irritating name, does really deliver some great value wines.

Truly Irresistible Fiano 2014, Benevento (The Co-operative £6.99) seems to have won multiple awards at various wine competitions this year.

Fiano is a southern Italian white grape and this is seriously great value with peach-like fruit as well as notes of orange and lemon zest followed by a fleshy palate and a lovely juicy finish.

Try this with some antipasto or maybe a seafood risotto during what’s left of the summer.

Truly Irresistible Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Leyda Valley (The Co-operative £6.99) is another perfect summer wine.

Made in the Leyda Valley, one of Chile’s cooler wine regions, this is really fresh with lime and gooseberry fruit, followed by lots of zesty fruit on the palate and a wonderfully refreshing finish.

It’s one of those wines that does exactly what you want it to do.

It’s a simple, easy-drinking, thirst-quenching summer white. Try it with a simple salad or some pan-grilled fish.

Zalze Shiraz Grenache Viognier 2015, Western Cape (The Co-operative £5.99 on offer from £6.99 until August 2) is a South African Rhone style blend and is one of my go-to barbecue reds, especially when there is lots of sticky, marinated meat on offer.

There is lots of black. Bramble-like fruit and the addition of a small proportion of Viognier to the blend adds a certain perfume to the wine, along with some nice spice and a touch of smokiness.

It’s great value but when on offer it’s a real star buy.

Staying with Rhone style reds, Cotes du Rhone 2014, La Grange St Martin (The Co-operative £5.99 on offer from £6.99 until August 2) is a blend of Grenache and Syrah made by one of the region’s most respected producers.

There’s cherries, redcurrants and spice all wrapped up in a warm, smooth, satisfying wine.

It is the sort of easy drinking yet interesting wine that is a great reflection on the current range at The Co-operative.
