Three bold red wines this week to go with some big, spicy barebecue foods, and these selections are all slightly out of the mainstream.
Stobi Vranec 2011, Tikves region (winerack.co.uk £9.99). If you’ve not tried a wine from Macedonia then this is an excellent place to start.
Vranec is the grape which is indigenous to Macedonia and here it produces a deeply coloured red wine with damson and blackberry fruit, roasted coffee and liquorice with ripe tannins and a long finish – a very pleasant surprise.
Corte Ibla Nero d’Avola 2010, Sicilia (M&S £9.99 on offer from £11.99 until July 28) is another vibrant choice.
Made from Sicily’s Nero d’Avola grape this is also a bold red with dark bramble fruits, spices, a touch of mocha and a powerful finish.
Some Young Punks ‘Passion has Red Lips’ 2013, McLaren Vale
Made by the brilliantly named Some Young Punks winery, if nothing else the name and the label will be a conversation piece but luckily the wine is as good as the story. A blend of the classic Aussie pairing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, there are dark berries, plum, some spice and a hint of mint, followed by a rich yet elegant palate.
