Have your say

I’ve got three wines this week to put a smile on your face as winter closes in.

Sweet wine can be made in a number of ways and Rustenberg Straw Wine 2011 Coastal Region (Waitrose, on offer at £11.99 from November 6 – half bottle) is an interesting example of a rarely seen method.

In essence, the grapes are picked and then allowed to dry on straw mats, which concentrates the sugars. The resulting wine is absolutely delicious with honey and peaches. It is very sweet with real complexity.

If you are looking for a serious red then Vergelegen Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2007, Stellenbosch (Majestic, £19.99 or two at £16.99 each) would work very well.

Blackcurrants, cedar, spices and a little mocha, it has a long, complex and elegant finish.
