With the final days of summer now upon us here are a few wines to enjoy round the last few barbecues or alfresco lunches.

I’ve recommended this first wine before but while it’s on offer you should snap it up. Casa Planeta White 2013, Sicily (Co-operative £7.99 on offer from £9.99 until August 26) is a blend of the local grecanico and chardonnay. Really fresh with crisp citrus fruit this is the perfect partner to seafood.

Our thirst for rioja seems unquenchable currently and it can be one of the great matches for barbequed lamb. Baron de Ley Reserva 2009, Rioja (Co-operative £7.99 on offer from £10.99 until August 26) is made from tempranillo which has spent 20 months in American oak. There’s dark fruits, coffee spice, a lick of vanilla and a very satisfying finish.

Top tipple: I Frati 2013, Cà dei Frati, Lugana

This has to be one of my favourite white wines of the summer. From Lugana in Italy’s Lombardy region and made from the local grape turbiana this shows just how interesting some of Italy’s more obscure wines can be. Full of peaches and citrus fruits, it has a lovely texture before a lively, crisp, dry finish – definitely worth seeking out. Try with some simple fish on the barbecue or a selection of antipasto.
