A few wines to mention this week that have really struck me as over-delivering.
Ondine Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Darling (Majestic £8.99 or £5.99 when you buy 2 until Oct 27) comes from the Cape’s west coast, where the maritime climate allows some nice Sauvignon Blanc to be produced.
This is simple, dry white which is great value while on offer. It has tropical fruits, asparagus and grassy notes with some zesty acidity.
Also try Yalumba Organic Shiraz 2013, South Australia (Waitrose on offer £7.49 from £9.99 until Oct 28) . I served this at an organic lunch and it went down well. Made by Australia’s oldest family-owned wine producer, it has autumn dark fruits, violets and some spice. Try it with sausage casserole.
I still struggle a little with the Truly Irresistible name of the Co-op’s range, but luckily there are some little gems in the wine range. This is from Piedmont in northern Italy and it’s cracking value, with juicy, dark fruits including cherries and plums and an easy smooth finish. Perfect with a plate of tomato-based pasta. The Co-operative, £6.99
