Role: I'm responsible for the efficient running of the three sites located in the Segensworth estates which make up Fareham Distribution Centre. There are two main warehouses – one ambient and one chilled and frozen – plus as a bulk storage facility and in-house workshop. In total, we employ between 400 and 500 people, depending on the season.
How did you get into distribution, and why?
I got into distribution and warehousing almost by accident in 1985 through working on a short-term contract for P&H in the warehouse.
During this time, I found the variety the role provided and the job itself was thoroughly enjoyable and haven't looked back since.
What do you enjoy about it and not like about it?
I enjoy the variety, the challenges and the interaction with the people. Earlier this year we had our re-assessment for the Investors In People Accreditation, and some of the comments from the assessor were very rewarding.
We are also actively involved with various steering groups in the area – from the local council, to the Segensworth Business Form and the Chamber of Commerce, where I have sat on Transport and Planning Committee for nearly two years. Thankfully, there is very little I dislike about what I do. The most difficult aspect for me is trying to deliver what seems like the impossible.

Firstly, my sense of humour. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am renowned for a slightly wicked sense of humour and like to work in an environment where a relaxed but professional is encouraged.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, my family. My wife Nicole is very supportive of what I do and very understanding when I have to pop back at all sorts of strange hours, especially as we have two young daughters.
