I was delighted to be nominated
New mum Emma Oughton has always made time to have her hair done but was in need of a special pampering session.
She was thrilled to bits when daughter Imogen came along, not to mention relieved as it had been a long and difficult birth.
Emma, from Portchester, went into labour on a Tuesday and Imogen was delivered four days later by Caesarean section.
Imogen, now 12 months old, was delivered safely but Emma, 26, suffered from infections after the birth which made the first few weeks of motherhood quite difficult.
Her stepmum, Christine Robbins, thought Emma could do with a treat after all she'd been through and that's why she nominated her for one of our makeovers.
Christine told us: 'I would like her to have a makeover because she is a very special person. She has been my stepdaughter for seven years and is the link between our two families.'
We were delighted to help and arranged for Emma, who is married to Pete, to visit the team at H-Lites in Eastney Road, Eastney, Portsmouth, for a pamper session.
Hair
Stylist Jodie Irish welcomed Emma to the salon and chatted to her about what styles and colours would suit her best.
Emma's hair was very thick and long and she was used to wearing her shoulder-length locks tied up in a ponytail. Emma's fringe was dark and heavy and Jodie was keen to give her a style that would show off more of her face.
Jodie used a dark, rich brown to transform the colour of Emma's hair, along with some toffee-coloured highlights, to lighten up her look.
For the cut, Jodie concentrated on removing the weight and thickness by taking away a lot of the hair that was shielding Emma's face.
She cut the hair shorter at the back but kept it long enough so the natural waves Emma had would still allow for plenty of movement.
Emma wanted a look that would be easy and quick to style, so by taking out a lot of the length and weight Jodie managed to achieve her aim.
To style, she used Paul Mitchell's Skinny Serum to flatten the hair and add shine, as well as Re-Works, to add texture.
Make-up
Experienced make-up artist Katie Roberts has a studio next door to Hi-Lites and popped round to give Emma lots of handy make-up advice.
Katie began by applying a pale foundation all over before setting the base with translucent powder. A pink blusher was used to highlight Emma's naturally high cheekbones.
Katie applied a frosted wash all over the eyelids followed by an electric blue eyeliner on the top of the lids. A darker blue was then used in the corners of each eye. Mascara was applied to open up her eyes and complete her look.
As Katie wanted to focus the emphasis on Emma's eyes she kept the lips pale with a nude lipgloss.
Verdict?
Emma says: 'I was a bit shocked when Christine told me she'd nominated me because no-one has ever done anything like that for me before. I was really pleased and it was a very nice surprise so I was looking forward to some pamper time.
'I love my hair and make-up. At first I wanted to keep the length of my hair the same but Jodie persuaded me to go for a change and I'm pleased that I did.
'I wanted a style that would be easy in the mornings and this will be. I've had a really nice day.'
