It's been a good six months for all our staff

Bernie Stevens, general manager of Meggitt Avionics, Fareham, writes about his last seven days in business.

We supply sensing systems and cockpit displays to the famous names in aviation – Eurofighter Typhoon, the Apache attack helicopter and most of the world's luxury business jets.

This week I had plenty to say at our three-monthly employee consultation briefing.

We had the best half-year sales in the history of the business so there were lots of positive things to communicate.

These results are not a spike on a sales graph. They're the cumulative effect of structured, disciplined hard work over time.

We're continually improving our competitiveness resulting in new business for our world-leading secondary flight displays and we're ready to enter a transformational phase in air data computing.

Our processes are excellent but success has come from the difference our people make. That was the highlight for me—not our absolute sales growth.

We had a talent review yesterday, looking at next generation managers and how we're developing them. And I'm preparing for our first of our employee feedback workshops – I'm going to have a cuppa with every one of our 280 employees.

You have to lead by example and I see a significant part of my role as keeper and promoter of the values that make a business really successful – a positive win-win attitude, working together, a culture of continuous improvement and equal opportunities for everyone to maximise their potential and contribution.

And why would you want it to be any other way? After all, professional wellbeing goes hand in hand with healthy financial results, which is good for everyone.
