Kevin Stewart, managing director, The Coast 106FM, writes about his best deal.
The challenge of launching a new regional radio station serving nearly 1.7 million people in just 10 weeks meant we called upon all our reserves of experience in the radio industry. It is a real privilege to be running Celador Entertainment's first radio station and to have the backing of the company and the talent and experience that brings.
We designed The Coast from scratch, from branding to programming, marketing to staffing. The icing on the cake was securing a contract to broadcast The Coast on DAB Digital radio. We are on 106 and 106.6 FM, but digital radio ownership in the area is more than 34 per cent and growing fast, so presence on DAB was a must have.
DAB digital radio offers crystal clear reception and the radios tend to be more distinctive than your ordinary tranny. They also have great features such as live pause, rewind and record.
We negotiated the contract and a way of delivering the station to the DAB transmitters within a few days and the regulator Ofcom managed to licence us within a week!
It went to the wire with The Coast launching on DAB on October 29 – just a few hours before our official launch.
