Louis MacDonald
Louis MacDonald is the secretary of Portsmouth Trades Union Council (PTC). He writes about the best deal he ever made.
'International Labour Organisation figures show every 15 seconds a worker is killed or injured somewhere in the world – in the UK, for instance, research shows annual asbestos fatalities won't peak until 2025.
'The deal which gave me most pleasure was securing a site in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, as location for the PTC Memorial, with an annual service on each year to mark all the workers killed or injured by the type of work they do, or the substances they are exposed to.
'The memorial, in the form of a tree encircled by a solid oak bench, adjacent to a suitably-worded white Portland memorial stone, was designed by the PTC and financed solely by donations from trade unions across the UK.
'But a late and unexpected 1,500 charge by the city council, limited the other costs.
'As a consequence I successfully convinced FSL of the merit of the memorial, and secured their agreement to manufacture, free of charge, the memorial's high quality oak bench.'
