Matt Bowles
Matt Bowles, 36, the commercial manager of Fareham-based TJ Group, which deals with waste and recycling.
'When the old Tricorn Centre was being demolished in 2003, I bought all the concrete from the demolition company involved.
'As recyclers of concrete and other industrial waste for the construction industry, we deal with several demolition companies.
'One from London approached us and asked if we would be interested and effectively we ended up buying all the concrete from the Tricorn and turning it into material to be used in construction.
'We carted away 70,000 cubic squares of concrete, taking it back to our recycling depot in Fareham and it was used in a vast range of projects from new buildings to the foundations for road works.
'It was a highly problematic job, the biggest demolition ever to happen in Portsmouth and I'm proud to have played a part in getting rid of such an eyesore.'
TJ Group deals with large scale industrial waste as well as domestic material and also runs fundraising schemes for charity.
The family-run company hopes to be in the running for the Community Contribution of the Year category of The News business excellence awards.
