New chief to build on success of Technopole
Around 50 businesses in the Portsmouth Technopole have seen a new manager arrive on the scene.
The 20,000sq ft building is seen as a springboard for start-up firms to develop, but is only around 50 per cent occupied, and now its owners have brought in a smooth property operator to lure in more clients.
PTL owns the building and had been managing it in-house, but it has now plumped to hand management to Havant-based giant Fasset, with a view to putting the Technopole 'at the heart of Portsmouth city region'.
Chris Allington, joint managing director of Fasset, based at Langstone Technology Park, said: 'The aim is to bring the Technopole closer to the city region's economic regeneration agenda.
'One of the key things we intend doing is encouraging technology transfers between the Technopole and businesses and institutions like the University of Portsmouth.
'That will help encourage the next generation of Bill Gateses though the commercialisation of technology developed right on our doorstep.
'The significance of knowledge-based industries in and around Portsmouth, which has 6,500 businesses, should not be under-estimated.
'For example, the defence industry contributes more than five per cent of south Hampshire's GDP – equivalent to some 680m a year, and the city's naval base alone generates some 35,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
'The possibilities arising from collaborative tie-ups between the Technopole and local organisations and institutions are exciting and immense.'
This latest contract, which began on April 1, sees Fasset's portfolio climb to 1.4m sq ft of business space, encompassing more than 40 companies with 7,000 employees at parks across southern England.
