Paper Review: £32m deal for striker stalls over wage demands

Portsmouth, Tottenham, Manchester City, Southend, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Newcastle all make the news on the back pages. Here is our round up.

SUNDAY TIMES: Jermain Defoe does not intend to play for Portsmouth again after receiving death threats from angry fans, incensed by his desire to rejoin Harry Redknapp at Tottenham. Also: Who said that Christmas was over? London Irish went back to the top of the Guinness Premiership - for 24 hours at least - thanks not only to the gifts presented to them by a Newcastle side heading ever deeper into a relegation grapple with Bristol, but also to an attacking display of genuine class, invention and flair that fully merited a seven-try tally and a bonus point despite the defensive frailties of their opponents.

SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Officials of the England and Wales Cricket Board are understood to be drawing up a short list of potential England coaches in the event of Kevin Pietersen failing to make peace with Peter Moores after the captain's return from South Africa on Thursday. Also: More than one in 10 of England's leading professional rugby players face redundancy next season under new proposals.

OBSERVER: Mark Hughes won the FA Cup four times as a player, yet the Manchester City manager was left squirming with embarrassment as his side made a shocking exit from the competition at Eastlands. Also: Southend manager Steve Tilson has a strange take on the supposed magic of the FA Cup.

DAILY STAR SUNDAY: Mark Hughes was facing an Eastlands exit last night after his Manchester City team humiliatingly crashed out of the FA Cup. Also: Man United's bid to permanently sign 32 million Carlos Tevez have been hit by his huge pay demands.

SUNDAY EXPRESS: Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted for the first time that Carlos Tevez could be on his way out of Old Trafford. Also: Spurs will land long-term target Stewart Downing in a 12million deal in this transfer window - thanks to player power.

MAIL ON SUNDAY: England coach Peter Moores is on the brink of being sacked after captain Kevin Pietersen told friends he will not back down over his threat to quit rather than carry on working with him. Also: Manchester City suffered FA Cup humiliation yesterday as the richest club in the land crashed 3-0 at home to Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest.

NEWS OF THE WORLD: Manchester City's multimillion spending spree - and the future of Mark Hughes - was thrown into doubt after an FA Cup humiliation by Nottingham Forest. Also: Under-fire Luiz Felipe Scolari will not be buying a striker despite seeing his Chelsea side draw 1-1 with lowly Southend.

SUNDAY MIRROR: Mark Hughes saw his team dumped out of the FA Cup - but insisted he will sign five new players in the January transfer window. Also: Juventus have tabled a written 20 million bid for Jermain Defoe.

THE PEOPLE: Mark Hughes risked the wrath of his Middle East paymasters by slumping to a nightmare FA Cup exit to Nottingham Forest. Also: Tony Adams wants to rescue Joey Barton from his nightmare at Newcastle United.

THE INDEPENDENT: Mark Hughes admitted last night that Manchester City need "four or five players" to challenge consistently for honours. Also: Sometime this week the leadership of the England cricket team will be determined. If it is not quite the case that either Kevin Pietersen, the captain, or Peter Moores, the coach, will have to go, it is pretty close to it.
