Sylvia Childs and Arthur Jerrom were married in Portsmouth in time for Christmas.
They tied the knot on December 8, 1951, at the register office in St Michael’s Road.
After a quick honeymoon with the in-laws in east London, Able Seaman Jerrom – or Jerry as he was known to friends – was on his way to Christmas Island aboard the tank-loading craft HMS Narvik, for Britain’s very first atomic land explosion test.
The groom was well-known in the Portsmouth area as he played guitar with The Tumbleweeds. The country and western band’s bass player was a lad called Dave Peacock – and he went on to find fame as one half of Chas and Dave.
Jerry and Sylvia will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday.
