They’ll pass their milestone on Thursday and plan to mark the day with their family and friends at home in Hilsea, Portsmouth.

They first met one Sunday afternoon in May 1947 at the dockyard in Portsmouth.

Romance blossomed and the couple were engaged on April 1, 1949, eventually marrying on August 18, 1951.

After marrying, Don became an Admiralty draughtsman and they moved to Bath, where their first son Derek was born in 1956.

By 1958 they’d moved back to Portsmouth where their second son Barry was born.

Don spent many years working as an operator services manager for the Portsmouth telephone area, while Ivy worked in Boots.

They were able to retire together and are both still active members of the community.

Ivy and Don have grandchildren, Stuart, 30, Anita, 28, Adam, 22, Mark, 20 and James, who is 19.

Now, both 80, they’re looking forward to celebrating their diamond anniversary.
