A common way for couples to meet each other today is online – and that’s exactly how Jenny Arthur and Ian Thompson first met after she sent him a message on Facebook.

Soon after, in May 2009, they decided to meet up and the pair quickly fell for each other.

Ian Thompson and Jenny Arthur were married on August 4, 2012.

Ian Thompson and Jenny Arthur were married on August 4, 2012.

Jenny, 43, says: ‘We were both bored and joined up thinking we wouldn’t get anything from it.

‘But we soon met up because I don’t really like talking online.’

It was almost straight away that they realised how well they worked together.

Jenny says: ‘We got on really, really well and our children met and got on well too. It was quite scary how quick it all happened really.

‘I kind of wanted it to slow down so I could enjoy it more. I think we both realised we were right for each other.’

It was on Valentine’s Day in 2010 that Ian proposed to Jenny while they were at home. They had spoken about it before and Jenny had already picked out a ring.

The couple, from Leigh Park, were married on August 4 at Portsmouth Register Office and held their reception at The Plough and Barleycorn in Waterlooville.

They decided to get married this year as Jenny’s father had become quite ill and they wanted him to be there to walk her down the aisle.

He gave his permission for the union, but sadly he passed away the following month, although Jenny still had him with her as she made her way through the church.

She says: ‘My younger sister bought me a locket.

‘She put a picture of my dad in it and it had a little note saying something like ‘‘I do give this woman away’’.

‘I tied it round my wrist, so he was with me throughout the whole day.’

Jenny became Jenny Arthur-Thompson on the day she married Ian, and says it was more than she ever hoped it would be.

She says: ‘There was a lot of planning because we did it all ourselves, but it was really special. It was very traditional but it really was a fantastic day. It was better than I thought it would be and I loved it.’

The couple are now saving up to go on their honeymoon next year to Egypt.
