A short while ago in a hotel not far away, Jenny Smedley and Mark Durham managed to fight off cosmic villains so they could tie the knot in happiness and peace.

The Star Wars-potty pair used the Force for the benefit of all their wedding guests and enjoyed a wonderful ceremony and reception at Langstone Hotel.

Jenny and Mark, massive fans of the Star Wars films, hired Darth Vader and Scout Troopers from Episode VI – Return of the Jedi to make an appearance on their big day.

‘We’re both geeks to be honest and we’ve loved the Star Wars films from a young age,’ says Jenny.

‘So we decided it would be fun to have something like this at our wedding.

‘We attracted a lot of attention from other guests at the hotel and our families and friends loved it.

‘Although another couple were being shown around at the time and I heard the wedding co-ordinator say “this isn’t a normal part of the package”.

‘To be honest they looked horrified.’

But the film characters were just right for the wedding of Mark and Jenny, who visit conventions and love other sci-fi movies and series.

They hired their villainous visitors from costume group UK Garrison, which provides characters for events and donates money to various charities.

Jenny says the funniest moment was when the legalities were being discussed with the registrar before the ceremony.

‘We were trying to go through all the legal bits and it was all very serious, then I heard the deep breathing of Darth Vader as he went past the door.’

The Portsmouth couple mixed the crazy with the conventional and had a traditional ceremony.

But the Stormtroopers assembled at the door towards the end to escort Jenny and Mark out.

‘It was supposed to be a surprise for everyone but Mark was so excited about the whole thing that he had to tell everybody,’ laughs Jenny.

The guests loved having their pictures taken with the characters, but everyone posed for more traditional shots too.

And Jenny decided against the Princess Leia look, instead opting for a beautiful classic dress.

‘We didn’t want a themed wedding as such, we wanted nice pictures and memories. But we were keen for it to be personal and a lot of fun,’ she says.

The cake was decorated with a miniature bride and groom holding lightsabers and the couple left their evening celebrations to the Star Wars theme.

Jenny, a lawyer, and software engineer Mark enjoyed a honeymoon in the Lake District and Scottish Highlands.
