Selena Williams and her friends found a speedy way to celebrate her birthday.

Selena’s parents had been looking for a memorable way for their daughter to mark her 13th birthday and found it down at Gunwharf Quays.

The birthday girl and nine of her friends hopped on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) for a 45-minute tour around Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent.

They got to see HMS Warrior up close and enjoyed a thrilling ride out to see the forts, reaching speeds of up to 40 knots.

The girls had a safety briefing and were kitted-out with life jackets before heading out onto the water. Selena can be seen here on the back row of the boat at the right getting ready for the journey to begin.

Selena’s mum Helen says: ‘We wanted to do something different for her. We looked at a couple of options like ice skating but she’d always wanted to do the RIB ride and it was absolutely fantastic, they thoroughly enjoyed it.

‘They came back really wet and cold but they loved it.’

After the RIB ride they headed for Selena’s Hayling Island home via the fairground to get a fish and chip supper.

Everyone stayed over for a sleepover and enjoyed playing a dancing game on the Nintendo Wii.
