Jean and Cliff Brown have been married for 60 years and have lived in the same house for 58 – and they couldn’t be more content.
To show the measure of their happiness, they have marked their diamond wedding with a blessing at the church in which they were married.
The couple invited about 40 guests to the occasion at St Cuthbert’s in Portsmouth. They then enjoyed a buffet with friends and family.
Jean and Cliff had a lot in common from the start. They both adored dancing and met at a dance at South Parade Pier. They’re also fans of Pompey.
‘The only disappointment in Cliff’s life has been PFC,’ laughs Jean.
‘He’s been a regular fan for 73 years come rain or shine. We’ve never been really widely travelled, apart from a few overseas holidays, but neither of us have felt like we should have lived differently. I think some people think we’re a bit set in our ways but we’re both very happy and that’s what matters.’
After marriage the couple settled in Portsmouth and had four children. Cliff ran his own building firm and became a lecturer at Highbury College. Jean worked as a receptionist. They have 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
