A business manager from Southern Electric is this week’s We Can Do It T-shirt winner after he led a team which refurbished a community centre.

Lee Irvine and the firm’s business department rolled up their sleeves and transformed Whiteley Community Centre, in Gull Coppice, Whiteley, with the aid of paintbrushes and rollers.

They repainted the centre’s main hall, corridors, an art and crafts room used by children and each of the toilets.

The team got the chance to give the centre a new lease of life through Southern Electric’s ‘Community at Heart’ programme.

The programme, which was launched in April 2010, enables staff to have a day off once a year and help out others in their community.

Lee, head of business discovery at Southern Electric, said: ‘I’m very proud of what we achieved.

‘It’s nice to be recognised for what we did on the day. As a company we strive to do positive things for the community.

‘It was out of the kindness of our own hearts and our focus is to do things for the greater good.’

Tyrone Garrick, who was part of the team, said:

‘Everyone got really stuck in and had a great time.

‘It was great to see the place looking fantastic by the end of it.

‘The smiles on the faces of the people there said it all.’
