Bill and Betty Bentley knew it was love within days of meeting each other.
And when you’re in love what’s the point in hanging around?
The couple tied the knot just two weeks after that first meeting – and now they’ve just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Betty, 79, says: ‘We were married on June 30 1951 in Aldershot. We were both in the army. I was a catering assistant and my husband was a chef. I met him on the Saturday and two weeks later we were married. He was going away for a year and so we decided that was it.
‘I knew within the first week. He was handsome and we just fell in love.’
Betty and Bill, 83, live in Titchfield and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in style.
The couple received the traditional card of congratulations from the Queen and marked the day with friends and by going out for a meal.
At the weekend they enjoyed a big party for family and friends at the Queen’s Head, in Titchfield.
‘We had a wonderful time,’ adds Betty.
The couple went on to have three children, Bernard, Anthony and daughter Maria. They also have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
‘I think I knew back then that we’d still be together,’ adds Betty. ‘We’ve had our ups and downs, we’ve had our troubles, we’ve had to work through them. We’ve got three lovely children and lovely grandchildren and great-grandchildren.’
