Youngsters have created stunning tiles representing their school to form part of a mosaic path for a community garden in Fareham.
A group of 24 artistic seven to 11-year-olds at Wallisdean Junior School designed and made six tiles with the help of mosaic artist, Liz D’Ath, for the Broadlaw Walk housing and shopping development.
They came up with a range of themes – from the school logo of a child holding up a globe and the school’s woodland area, to a rainbow and a paint palette to represent their love of art.
Cameron Warwick, nine, recreated the school logo.
He says: ‘I thought every time someone saw it they would think of us.
‘I was so pleased the artist chose it and I can’t wait to show it to my parents and walk past it.
‘It’s nice to know that something we made will be out there for everyone to see and I hope people will be impressed. Maybe our tiles will make them want to send their children to our school!’
Lauren Brocklebank, nine, says: ‘I never thought I was that good at art so I was surprised when my idea for a cake, which symbolised celebrating someone’s birthday and happy times, was chosen.
‘I really enjoyed making the tiles. We used tiny bits of different coloured tiles, some bigger and some smaller, and I made sure there was lots of colour for the cake.
‘I’ve never worked on mosaics before but I’d like to do it again. When all the little tiles came together it looked great.
‘I hope people think what we’ve made is good – I hope it puts a smile on their face.’
Staff and pupils at the Fareham school are now looking forward to visiting the community path, which is due to be laid in the spring.
Liz Baldwin, deputy head, says: ‘The children really enjoyed doing it and knowing that what they were making was going to be part of their local community and enjoyed by people for years to come.
‘When the path is laid we will be taking the children to visit and see the results of their hard work.’
Emily Reed, the school’s art manager, adds: ‘I was so impressed with the children’s ideas. They have really done us proud.’
