Having a full-time job leaves many people very little time to do anything else.
But a team of caring employees decided to give up some of their precious spare time to make a difference in their community.
The crew, made up of workers from six McDonald’s restaurants across Portsmouth, joined forces with company official Grant Copper to tackle litter problems around Whale Island.
The clean-up operation, which was part of McDonald’s Love Where You Live campaign, was designed to make workers take responsibility for the areas where they live.
And it also encouraged them to take pride in their communities.
Wearing high-visibility jackets, the team of volunteers gave up their own time to brave the rain and wind, scouring the area for any bits of rubbish they could find.
Grant, who as a franchisee for McDonald’s runs restaurants on the company’s behalf across the south, says: ‘It was inspiring to see members of the community join forces to take action on litter that damages our environment.’
Grant admits there’s still a ‘significant proportion’ of people who think that dropping litter is acceptable but adds: ‘It’s everyone’s responsibility and through these events we wanted to generate awareness of the issue, educate those people on how to dispose of rubbish properly and encourage them to be more responsible.
‘I’d like to thank my staff for their hard work and setting a good example of what can be achieved if people pull together.
‘It’s vital that we all do our bit to tackle the issue – everyone, from local businesses like mine to the residents of Portsmouth, should make a commitment to helping protect the local environment.’
The event was just one of over 400 large-scale recent clean-ups taking place across the country to support the campaign.
Aside from litter events, staff also patrol the streets for litter on a daily basis.
Phil Barton, chief executive of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, says: ‘It’s great to see the effort made by staff in raising long-term awareness of the issue and promoting the anti-littering message, ranging from large-scale events like this to their own patrols.
‘Love Where You Live is an opportunity for local businesses to lead by example, to encourage customers and the wider community to be responsible for their litter.’
