When Sandra Allen first saw husband Robin in the cinema, she was impressed by his hair.
‘All the boys had a bit of an Elvis look at the time and I thought his was really nice. You know, they used the Brylcreem and all that. Well I was really impressed,’ she says.
More than 50 years later and the couple are celebrating their golden wedding – and Robin has a little less hair.
‘Of course I love him just as much,’ laughs Sandra. ‘I won’t say we haven’t had our ups and downs, but we’ve worked at it. That’s what you have to do. I think we’re happier now than ever, probably because we’re retired and we go on our cruises and do a lot together.’
The couple grew up in Gosport and met when they were teenagers. They were married a few years later.
Robin worked as a shipwright at Camper & Nicholsons and Vosper Thornycroft and Sandra worked in several places. She was a training officer at factory Cyanamid when she retired.
The couple, who live in Gosport, have a son and daughter, four granddaughters and a great grandson.
They celebrated their anniversary with the family and some friends and will be going on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords in September.
