C aring George Boyden runs a trolley service and helps residents in a care home - and for that he this week’s We Can Do It T-shirt winner.

The 84-year-old has been lending a helping hand at the Emsworth House care home for the past five-and-a-half years.

George, of South Road, Horndean, said: ‘My wife Gwen had been in the home before she died.

‘She had a stroke and wasn’t able to come back home.

‘It’s a very good home and I enjoy talking to all the residents – I guess I’m just that sort of bloke.’

After Gwen passed away, George was asked if he would like to continue helping out.

‘I do anything from fill up water jugs, close curtains, open windows, get things from the shops for people and run a tea trolley service,’ he added.

‘The manager could see I was capable of doing this, so approached me and said would I like to come in more often.

‘I just love doing it and it’s given me a chance to socialise as well.

‘When I was told I was nominated, I could not believe it, but I’m very grateful.’

George was put forward by manager Melanie Brodison, who describes him as ‘invaluable’.

She said: ‘George gives the extra time that staff cannot sometimes give. If we’re the cake then George is definitely the icing on top.’
