There’s nothing like food to inspire strong feelings, whether we’re drooling over a naughty treat, firmly cutting the carbs, or berating ourselves for a previous indulgence.
Similarly, it can be infuriating and baffling to someone who finds all food irresistible to witness the self-discipline of someone who never seems to struggle with dieting.
In reality, it all comes down to our food personality, according to Karen Knowler, author of a new book called Eat Right For Your Personality Type.
‘Each of us has an individual way of thinking, feeling and acting around food for a whole host of reasons,’ she says.
‘But each of us also has a core ‘style’ of eating or food personality to which we conform.
‘So while some people are passionate about food, others use their intellect to govern their food choices and like to be told what is ‘right’ to eat, and another type may use food to make them feel better about problems in their life.’
Recognising which type we are, she argues, helps us understand not only how we relate to food but also how we can organise our diet and eating patterns so we feel healthier and, if necessary, slim more successfully.
‘We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of this because food has tremendous power to affect the quality of our health, our energy levels, and radically affect our appearance,’ she adds.
‘But above all, most of us crave a peaceful relationship with food. The majority of us don’t want to be told what to eat, and we hate struggling with incessant food guilt and worry.
‘If we can see why we eat as we do, we can choose to work with that, or even try to adopt some of the characteristics of a different type of eater which appeals to us.’
