Review: Festivities fireworks concert
It had rained earlier in the day, but the clouds had parted and it was a balmy summer evening for the traditional opening of the Chichester Festivities up at the racecourse.
About 6,000 people brought along their picnics and folding chairs to enjoy an evening going down musical memory lane.
While barbecues sent up plumes of smoke from the nearby Trundle hill, those who had paid to be much closer to the action were dancing along to a succession of familiar hits.
From young children to pensioners, they were on their feet as the line-up of three tribute bands performed on a mobile stage set up where bookies normally take bets.
First up were The Fab Beatles, getting everybody in the party mood with a selection from John, Paul, George and Ringo's back catalogue.
Then it was the turn of Abba Magic to entertain the crowd, some of whom had come suitably dressed in glitter wigs, trouser suits and white platform boots. They lapped up hits including Mamma Mia and Thank You For The Music.
Last on were Queen B, who really rocked Goodwood with the singalong We Are The Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody and Fat-Bottomed Girls.
As darkness descended on the Downs and the last bottles of wine were drained, it was time for Kimbolton Fireworks to produce their party piece – a spectacular pyrotechnic display set to music that had necks craned skywards.
The festivities were underway with a bang – literally.
