Review: Kasabian

Kasabian are the band of the moment. After disappear-ing from the music scene for a short while, they resurfaced in March this year with new material previewed at a Royal Albert Hall gig in aid of Roger Daltrey's Teenage Cancer Trust.

They've got a lot on the go right now, with a summer full of festivals (including their awesome performance at Glasto), a stadium tour with Oasis and their own sold-out headline tour.

The new album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, spent two weeks at number one, before being knocked into second place this week by Michael Jackson's Number Ones.

The next single, on August 10, will be Where Did All The Love Go, which went down well with the crowd in Southampton last night.

In fact, every song went down well, making it impossible to pick out highlights. Each tune was met with a sea of clapping or waving hands, bobbing heads and singing, smiling faces.

Never have I seen a band and its fans so in tune with each other.

Frontman Tom Meighan's enthusiasm, appreciation and broad grin were infectious. No-one was enjoying it more than him, but he complemented the audience for matching him.

Probably the highest bounce of the night was for the band's recent single, Fire, but the singalong had begun before the first words of the opening number.

And it continued long after the band had left the stage, ending the way every Kasabian gig ends – with the crowd reprising the 'la la la la's of LSF.

This time it was loud. Roadies on stage stopped packing-up the instruments and equipment to watch the slowly dispersing crowd as they spread out into the night, echoing in all directions.

Kasabian play Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday.
