Job description: The job is varied and detailed. My main duties include interpreting optical prescriptions, giving advice to patients on lens type, frames and styling. I also take frame and facial measurements and make adjustments and repairs to spectacles. The management part of the job is much like other businesses; I deal with recruitment, administration, organisation, marketing and planning the development of Praills Opticians.
How long have you been doing it? I have worked at Praills Opticians for three years, but have been in optics for 16 years. I started out whilst still at school.
How did you get into it and why? I didn't get my first-choice work experience placement, but my second choice was helping out in a large multiple opticians. I enjoyed what the job entailed, and at the end of the two weeks I was actually offered a part-time job. I have been in the industry ever since.
What do you enjoy about it and not like about it? I like the satisfaction of a job well done. I enjoy problem-solving and helping people get the best from their spectacles and making sure they feel comfortable with them. There isn't much I dislike about the job, but there are several controls and restraints now coming into force, which means more paperwork!
What would be your idea of a perfect day? I'd start the day with helping some of our most loyal and regular customers. Praills has been operating in Fareham since 1918, and we have a lot of long-term patients and families on our books.
I might have a long lunch with a rep, before spending the afternoon in our workshop where I can get to grips with some repair work and adjustments. I'd go home in the evening for a meal with my family before putting my feet up to watch football on TV!
