Robin Lander Brinkley

Robin Lander Brinkley, 30, is managing director of PR and marketing company, Maxwell Communications

Job description: My job is to make sure that the products or services that my clients offer are seen, recognised and known by anyone who might purchase or use them.

I either create or contribute to a company's marketing strategy which is implemented through a combination of marketing tools from literature and websites, to events and press activity. I work with local, national and industry media, so I can be talking to The News, then The Law Society Gazette and then Heat magazine all in one morning.

How long have you been doing it? Eight years, and self-employed for three-and-a-half of those.

How did you get into it and why? I was at the University of Warwick and hadn't done anything vocational in my English degree, so I chose an option in marketing for some variety. The teacher was a complete inspiration and I loved the debates and discussion we had so much, I decided to pursue it as a career.

When I came home to Portsmouth, everyone told me I would never get a job in marketing outside of London, but I did and also gained a masters degree in the subject, after studying part-time at the University of Portsmouth's Business School. After three years I moved from one agency to another and then started my own business.

What do you enjoy about it and not like about it?

In terms of PR and marketing, I think anyone in my industry who moans about their work is bonkers – we are the luckiest people out there. I have a fantastic variety of clients who keep me enthused and I get to experience the thrill of creativity and business. Seeing your work in print, on TV or hearing it on the radio is a buzz, but the best feeling is when a client compliments you.
