LINED up and raring to go, these children could hardly wait to try out their new Christmas bikes.

But first, before they started pedalling, they got some expert advice at Eastney Community Centre in Bransbury Park about how to ride safely on their new machines.

In a session run by the Portsmouth Cycle Forum, their mechanic Chris Cheetham – known as Dr Bike – made sure parents had put the cycles together properly.

Forum secretary Hilary Reed said: ‘Every year at this time we see lots of families out in Bransbury Park with the children on their new bikes, so we thought it would be a good idea to hold this session there.’

During the lesson, the youngsters were taught how to ride safely and were given a map of cycle routes in the city.

Hilary added: ‘It also gave us a good chance to let parents know abut the work the forum does to promote the health benefits of cycling and the economic ones too in these days of expensive petrol.’
