Samantha dreams of being a ballerina

When Darcey Bussell starred on the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel, Samantha Bosshardt sat up and took notice.

The Southsea teenager dreams of becoming a professional ballerina and is edging closer to her goal by training at the London Studio Centre.

Samantha beat competition from hundreds of other dancers to be awarded a scholarship at the school where tuition fees are 11,400 a year. It means hard work, with some days ten hours long.

For Samantha, 17, the intensity is not a problem; she loves the exhilarating life of a full time dance student.

'I've found dancing at Studio exhausting but I never feel low on motivation. I love the atmosphere here, I feel like I'm in Fame. The hallways buzz with energy and there's always music being played. I love the fact that every day I'm doing something that I enjoy,' says Samantha, a former Portsmouth Grammar School pupil.

Her success at landing a place at the dance school follows years of hard work, honing her talent and grabbing some of the exciting opportunities that have come her way.

Samantha's passion for performance started at Southsea School of Dancing when she was just four. In 2006 The News reported on her experience of dancing with the Bolshoi at the Royal Opera House.

She had been training as a mid-associate at the Royal Ballet as part of the school's outreach programme. From there that she was recruited by the famous Russian company to perform an Egyptian dance with eight other girls in The Pharaoh's Daughter.

Her mum Angie says being the parent of a ballerina is like being on a rollercoaster. Angie says she experiences the highs and the lows.

'The highs are fantastic. When she steps on stage my heart's in my mouth and I'm hoping that it goes perfectly. There's a definite feeling of pride when people come up to me and say that Samantha was born to dance. I live all the disappointments too though. When she's upset then I'm upset.'

Angie has a lot to look forward to because Samantha is coming back to her roots this month to perform in Showtime at her old dance school.

Tickets for the show at Southsea School of Dancing can be bought through Samantha's former dance teacher Nina Brown, who can be contacted on (023) 9282 8492. Proceeds go to the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Rocky Appeal which is raising money to fund state of the art digital keyhole operating theatres.
