PORTSMOUTH City Council is urging those creative with words to apply to be next year’s Poet Laureate.

The council is encouraging poets who live or work in the area to apply for the role.

And the newly-appointed laureate will be announced on February 7, 2012 – the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens.

Dickens’ celebrations and the London Olympics will provide opportunities for next year’s laureate to showcase their talents.

KeliAnne B, pictured, became the first person to hold the post in February this year and has been writing and performing across the city, and promoting Portsmouth.

Anyone interested should send three original poems and a statement of interest to: Dom Kippin, Literature Development Officer Cultural Services, Civic Offices, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth, PO1 2AD.
