The News launched the Share It Campaign in January 2005 in a bid to cut traffic congestion across Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham and Havant.

Every day there are more than 300,000 car journeys across South Hampshire and experts estimate that the roads will be 45 per cent more crowded by the year 2030.

Routes such as the M275 heading into Portsmouth and the A32 from Gosport to Fareham are constantly jammed with cars - many of them heading in the same location.

If half the UK's motorists shared lifts then traffic congestion could be cut by 20 per cent and pollution by 10 per cent.

Specific schemes for car-sharing have been set up including 60 businesses based at Solent Business Park in Whiteley as well as

Portsmouth and Hampshire councils and stores like B&Q.

The web service www.hantscarshare.co.uk allows people who to find somebody to car share, letting people find those driving to relatively similar destinations and putting them in touch.
