Talk held about festival

MUSIC lovers have been finding out about the origins of an historic festival.

Members of the Elgar Society Southern Branch were given a talk about The Morecambe Festival, which was set up by Edward Elgar’s friend Canon Charles Vincent Gorton at the turn of the 20th century.

The talk was held at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre, in East Street, Havant.

Visitors discovered that the festival, held in Morecambe, was set up so choirs from across the country could come together and compete.

Peter Willey, of the Elgar Society Southern Branch, said: ‘Listening to the talk was Fiona Macaskill, the great great grand-daughter of Canon Gorton.

‘She was delighted to hear the talk and learn more about the connection between the family and the fine composer Edward Elgar.’
