Team sorted out those curls

She's got a wedding to plan and three children to look after so it's no surprise that Joelle Medze is short of time.

The 29-year-old can't wait to tie the knot to fiance Nicholas Kitching on December 16 but getting ready for her big day has left her feeling tired and stressed.

And when she's not tied up with wedding plans she's running around after sons Benjamin, five, Hayden, four, and Tobias, 18 months.

Joelle, from Buckland, Portsmouth, was desperate to find a way to tame her naturally curly hair and take some time out to relax from her hectic schedule.

When she spotted that Highbury College was looking to give one lucky woman a makeover she jumped at the chance.

She was picked up from her home, whisked off to the college's Eden Hair And Beauty Salon in Arundel Street, Portsmouth, and was treated to a pampering day to remember.

Here's how she got on:

Hair

Trainee hairdressers and beauty therapists use Highbury College's Eden Hair And Beauty salon to practice their skills and it's also open to the public for cut-price treatments.

Joelle met up with student Claire Spencer who took charge of sorting out her thick curly hair.

Claire, an NVQ Level 3 hairdressing student, began by trimming split ends and adding layers throughout the hair to make it lighter and more easy to manage.

Once she'd finished with the cut she applied a full head of weave highlights followed by an all-over warm chocolate brown colour.

Joelle's thick, unmanageable, dull-looking and greying hair was transformed into a glossy brown sleek mane.

Student Jade Morgan blow-dried Joelle's hair before running the straightening irons through it.

Make-up

Jodie Willis, who is in her third year of a beauty therapy course at the college, stepped in to give Joelle a fresh make-up look.

She began by matching a foundation colour to Joelle's skin tone before applying it for an even coverage.

Jodie used two shades of eyeshadow – a purple and a smoky grey – before applying eyeliner along the top line of the socket.

A hint of blusher was applied to the cheeks and Jodie kept the look subtle and suitable for the daytime by adding a soft red lipstick and gloss.

Verdict?

Joelle says: 'My hair is naturally curly so it's a nightmare to work on because it's got a mind of its own, but I'm really pleased with what they've done. My hair feels so much lighter – it's amazing how different it feels – and the colour looks great. It's been nice to get some peace and quiet for a change and just relax.'
