All aboard for the Southsea Fest

As everyone in Hampshire knows, Portsmouth, and Southsea in particular, is a hotbed of musical talent.

With more upcoming local bands than you can shake a One Eye'd Dog's stick at and more visiting megastars than you can Wedge in one Room, it seems fitting that the area also has its own festival celebrating new music.

Southsea Fest is a hidden gem in the festival calendar.

Its reputation has been building since 2007 and its capacity has increased tenfold.

Past performers, such as Southampton supergroup Band Of Skulls, can often be seen gracing the stages of much larger festivals the following summer.

As well as celebrating local talent, the not-for-profit festival draws the hottest new acts from across the nation to venues across 16 stages on and around Albert Road for one day.

This year's headliners will be Goldheart Assembly. Also appearing are local heroes The Strange Death Of Liberal England and Kasabian's mate Jersey Budd. Auction For The Promise Club are also on the bill.

This female-fronted unsigned indie rock band have garnered critical acclaim for their unique sound, which channels shoegaze through giant hooks and huge choruses.

They recently supported Reverend And The Makers, Paolo Nutini and Martha Wainwright. September 25 sees their debut EP, One, released.

Another act with a release in the pipeline is Skibunny. This Belfast duo are renowned remixers and now a top electro guitar pop band in their own right. Their album, Hugs, is out on September 27.

Southsea Fest takes place on Saturday, September 18. Tickets cost 15 for adults and 8 for children from southseafest.com
