Brit Floyd at Portsmouth Guildhall

Blindingly brilliant, jaw-droppingly authentic, at last Pink Floyd have the tribute show they deserve.

The Brits have reclaimed the crown from the acclaimed Australian Pink Floyd show and kicked off their world tour in Portsmouth.

A fitting venue, as it was on this very stage, on Friday, January 21, 1972, that Pink Floyd performed the live world premiere of The Dark Side of The Moon.

Brit Floyd, then, had much to live up to, and like clear white light refracted into a rainbow they dazzled.

With random precision, they flitted back and forth through Floyd’s many eras, seven musicians and four female backing vocalists playing with such aplomb they were even confident to add the odd flourish of their own here and there.

Tracks from Dark Side of The Moon mingled with Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall and The Division Bell.

Lighting and digital projections made fantastic use of the space, taking the audience off on a different trippy voyage with each song.

Highlights for me included a full performance of Echoes, a spellbinding Comfortably Numb, and a blistering finale, Run Like Hell.

It was poignant to see a shot of the briefly reunited Floyd at Live 8 slipped into the visuals of Wish You Were Here, alongside loving tributes to Syd Barrett and Rick Wright.

Pink Floyd are no more, but at least now we have Brit Floyd. Look out for them this summer at Glastonbury.
