'The best deal for me during my short time as general manager of Endeavour Quay has been to sign up two new Volvo Ocean Race teams and win the contract to assemble and prepare race boats for the Volvo Ocean Race at Endeavour Quay.
'All the boat components are made by specialists around the world: the hull, the mast, the rigging, the keel, and the sails all descended on Gosport in a precise time window, and were put together to create the most powerful racing boats of their generation.
'The two teams in question were Team Russia, financed by a Russian millionaire and crewed by Olympic-class sailors, and Team Green Dragon, funded by a joint Irish/Chinese partnership and crewed by a mostly Irish team led by British Olympic Silver medallist Ian Walker.
'The impact on the Gosport economy is significant as these boats each have teams of 20 to 30 people, who all need to be accommodated, fed and entertained. They will spread the word that Endeavour Quay, Gosport is the boat yard to come to in the UK.'
