As National Apprenticeship Week gets underway, top UK apprentice employer, Barratt Developments, is looking for keen learners hoping to join the homebuilding industry to support business growth.

The established homebuilder, recently named Employer of the Year at the National Apprentices Awards, aims to recruit six apprentice bricklayers, joiners, and technical apprentices at developments across the region.

The company has now opened the window for applications for apprentices to apply for work at developments across the region.

Chris Burton, regional managing director of Barratt in the region said, ‘This is a highly exciting time of growth for our business and for the south in particular, and we want to invite anybody with an interest in construction to consider applying for apprenticeships with us and help us build our award-winning new homes.

‘Our apprenticeships provide the perfect foundations for a career in the construction industry.’

Each apprentice will work on an assigned development in the region for part of their working week, as well as taking part in classroom-based learning at a local college.

Seventeen-year-old apprentice Katherine Colley, pictured, is one of Barratt Homes’ rising stars of the future. The Waterlooville teenager was so determined to realise her dreams of becoming a carpenter that she approached the five star homebuilder and secured a two weeks work placement when she was just 14 years old.

Since then, her determination and enthusiasm has seen her rewarded with the CITB Shield of Endeavour while studying at Highbury College and voted the CITB Apprentice of the Year.

At work, Katherine is part of the Aspire team in Southampton and visits schools and colleges on behalf of the homebuilder to talk about her experiences and the opportunities open to women in the construction industry.

Once Katherine has completed her carpentry apprenticeship she hopes to join the assistant manager scheme and become a site manager.

Recently named a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer, Barratt Developments has created more than 3,000 new jobs in the last year alone, and has pledged to take on 1,100 apprentices, graduates and trainees between 2014 and 2016.
