Week was conveyor belt of meetings

Antony Fanshawe, managing partner of the southern office of Begbies Traynor, writes about his last seven days in business.

Starting out the week, the first meeting of the day was with our PR consultancy, Polymedia, looking at activity to build the Begbies Traynor and BTG McInnes Corporate Finance brands in the south.

Although my specialism is corporate recovery, we also have a complementary discipline of corporate finance in this region.

BTG McInnes Corporate Finance. I met that team in the afternoon to consider opportunities to develop the two disciplines side-by-side.

On Tuesday, my day started with a partners' meeting where we looked at general everyday operational issues. Then it was time to head off to Portsmouth for a lunch with Royal Bank of Scotland. We have seen a rise in business from the Portsmouth area over the last year.

I had a meeting in the afternoon with LMA, an advertising company moving into administration – a sad case of a long-standing business which has just seen a significant drop in business which will result in the loss of 10 jobs. Making redundancies is always the hardest part of my job.

Wednesday came, and I had breakfast listening to a surprisingly upbeat economic seminar from Trevor Williams, chief economist of Lloyds TSB corporate markets.

Back down to earth with a haircut at 2pm before an appointment with a major multi-national company looking to discuss a programme to reduce the size of the group.

Thursday was Bath day! Off to our Bath office for a meeting with the team and a Corporate Finance Lunch Club. Then back for a Halloween Ball with the insolvency trade body, R3.

As the week drew to a close on Friday, the day started with a meeting in Salisbury with my colleague Julie Palmer to discuss a challenging administration that the regional team is working on together. Then it was back to the office to meet with a photographer in connection with a press release to support the sale of Hampshire manufacturing business, Stadium Chalk and Crayon Co Ltd.

The last meeting of the day was with a potential client and then it was home to walk the dog and sit down to a large G&T.
