What a great summer's day it was

It only takes a blink of an eye to miss the perfect photo opportunity – but keen snapper Paul Howe got his timing spot on.

He captured the moment a joking guest played peek-a-boo with a bemused baby relative at a family wedding to get the perfect snap.

And it was the fabulous expressions on their faces that caught our attention and led to Paul being declared the winner of our One Summer's Day competition.

>> On this page we show the winners and the top ten entries. See the 16-page Lifestyle special in The News today for 200 more of your great pictures.

Each year we ask readers to capture what they get up to on a typical summer day and this year we picked Saturday, July 26.

The sun was shining and you grabbed your cameras, eager to show us what you and your families were doing on that day.

Whether it was a fun family outing or just a relaxing day at home, those cameras were out in force and produced some truly memorable results.

It was one of the few sunny days of the summer and also coincided with the special Meet Your Navy event in Portsmouth, so there was plenty of inspiration.

Here's a further selection, illustrating some of the themes that appealed to you.

Paul says: 'It's awesome that I've won. My main hobby is photography and I want to do it professionally so winning is really going to help me.

'I'm just starting out really. I studied film at university and made the switch between film and photography in my second year so I've taught myself really.'

Paul wins a great prize of a seven-night family stay at a wide choice of Innkeeper's Lodge hotels, worth up to 595.

His photograph was taken at his cousin Michelle Howie's wedding to Wayne Abbott at New Place in Shirrell Heath near Fareham.

In the lull between the wedding service and dinner he started snapping as relative Colin Calvert tried to entertain the bride's 18-month-old niece Lexi Keens.

'She'd just got married and we were all standing around,' explains Paul, 21, of The Queensway, Portchester.

'Colin is a relative of mine and he was playing around and I caught this facial expression. The timing was just right.

'I love Lexi's face. She's really chilled and he's messing around.'

Happy snapper Sue Caplen is also celebrating after she was named runner-up.

Sue has won a three-night family stay at an Innkeeper's Lodge hotel, worth up to 255, after sending us an artistic picture of birds looking out to sea.

She'd parked up at Hayling Island with husband Dave when she spotted the birds.

The 61-year-old of The Causeway, Petersfield, said: 'The moment before they'd all been sitting on the bottom row as well. I thought it was quite something and a friend told me she thought it would make a good poster.'
