Whistle Down The Wind
Dark, mean, moody, brutal... they were all traits Alan Bates brought to the film version of this story of childhood innocence.
So Jonathan Ansell, the blond goody two shoes of G4 fame, is hopelessly miscast as 'Christ', right?
Well, surprising as it may seem... no. Not at all.
He makes a startling entrance to the role – and then grows in stature and confidence.
That his voice projects magnificently is a given – his vocal skills are stunning, with tremendous range. But his acting skills and stage presence are a revelation.
In fact, you have to look closely at him – and then look again and again – to be sure the dishevelled figure really is the lad from Bognor Regis.
He is just one of many successes on stage. Carly Bawden, who plays Swallow, is a recent graduate from acting school, but has a big, big future. She was Snow White and Cinders rolled into one, with the voice of an angel.
The kids who thought the man on the run from jail really was Jesus performed admirably. And the set was simple and clever.
Another winner from Andrew Lloyd Webber. Another winner from Bill Kenwright. And another Mayflower triumph.
Until Saturday.
