THE UK’S largest windsurfing festival is to be held on the island where the sport was founded.

Havant Borough Council is to sponsor the prestigious National Windsurfing Festival, in Hayling Island, on the first weekend in September, for the sixth year.

Hundreds of enthusiasts are set to descend on the island for competitions – known as masterblasters – and, for the first time ever, the national ‘stand up and paddle’ festival.

Councillor Mike Fairhurst said: ‘It’s a free family event and we hope that residents and visitors will come along and soak up the atmosphere.

‘It’s a great sport which was founded on Hayling Island by Pete Chilvers, so it is fitting to host the event on the Island.’
