Fareham Suella Fernandes, who backed the Brexit leave campaign, was jubilant with the result.

Speaking to The News, she said: ‘I am delighted with the result in Fareham.

‘It’s an record-breaking turnout in Fareham in favour of leaving the European Union which gives this result real legitimacy and validity.

‘I think that with the number of votes casts and the overall result it shows the people of Fareham feel strongly about the problems in the EU.’

She wished to thank all those for their efforts voting and campaigning.

Describing the nights overall action, Ms Fernandes said: ‘It’s been a roller-coaster.

‘As the results come in there have been some really surprising results from the likes of Sunderland and Wales where Leave has done better than expected.’

Fareham Borough Council’s leader, Councillor Sean Woodward, said today’s result was a stunning victory for democracy.

‘This sends a strong message that the people of Fareham want us out of the European Union,’ he said.

‘I believe this is for a mix of reasons. For me it’s about sovereignty; it’s about making our borders stronger and taking control of our law making and our finances.

‘But I am delighted that so many people have come out to vote. We have had a massive and unprecedented turnout for any election.’
