A HEROIN addict died after an abscess in his groin burst, an inquest heard.
Edward Clench, 40, of Sandringham Road, Fratton, Portsmouth, began taking heroin about seven years ago.

Although he had been through rehabilitation twice and attended Narcotics Anonymous, the inquest was told he injected the drug into his groin regularly.

Emergency services went to his address in March last year after Mr Clench phoned 999 saying an abscess had burst.

The inquest heard that by the time paramedics arrived Mr Clench had stumbled down the stairs and fallen on to the ground outside his bedsit.

There was a large amount of blood on the carpet and staircase and on paper towels Mr Clench had used to try to stem the bleeding.

He was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital but pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Coroner David Horsley recorded a verdict of death by misuse of drugs. He said: 'It was a problem he could not overcome.'
