Can you compose a sonnet to rival Shakespeare? Or a lyrical limerick to make people laugh?
If you have a talent for writing poetry then you may be in with a chance of winning a cash prize at the Havant Literary Festival Open Poetry Competition.

The competition is for poems of up to 20 lines. The first prize is £250, the second £100 and
the third £50.

September's event is the first literary festival to be held in the town. Local poet John Haynes, who won the Costa Award for Poetry in 2006 and the Troubadour Prize in 2007 is judging the entries and will be hosting an afternoon poetry workshop at the festival, which runs from September 25 to 28.

Closing date for entries is July 18. For an entry form, send an SAE to Denise Bennett, HLFS, Nineveh, 11 The Pallant, Havant, PO9 1BY.

There will also be a fund-raising summer jazz picnic in the grounds of Lake House, Bidbury Lane, Old Bedhampton on July 19 at 7.30pm. The George Regis Jazz Band will entertain guests. Tickets are also available from Nineveh or by calling (023) 9248 3217.
